The elucidation of the double-helix structure of the Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA) molecule in 1953 by Drs. James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin marked the beginning of what is now known as the new genetics. Research during the last 54 years in the fields of molecular genetics and recombinant-DNA technology has opened up new opportunities in agriculture, medicine, industry, and environment protection.
Availability of DNA-based molecular markers since 1980s has facilitated construction of complete genetic maps in several plants of academic and economic importance. Several computer softwares also have paved the way for handling huge numbers of markers and segregating individuals to frame these maps, also for detection of positions of genes and gene clusters, known as quantitative trait loci, on them.
Molecular marker-based genetic mapping has provided not only comprehensive depictions of the genomes but also facilitated elucidation of phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary pathways, map-based cloning of genes and above all use of molecular markers in various schemes of crop improvement, including germplasm characterization, marker-aided selection and introgression of genes through markerassisted backcross breeding.
